Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis can cause immense pain
or stiffness around the shoulder joint. Over the period our shoulder becomes
hard to move. Symptoms begin gradually and worsen over the years. Patients
recovering from medical conditions like stroke or mastectomy may also develop
this condition. Shoulder arthroscopy is considered to be one of the best
solutions for this condition.
Our shoulder joint is made up of three bones which form our
ball & socket joint, which are upper arm bone, shoulder blade, collar bone.
The tissue surrounding the shoulder joint hold everything together this is
called as capsule.
In case of frozen shoulder this capsule thickens and makes
it hard to move the shoulder joint. The scarring from frozen shoulder tightens
the joint, and there’s less synovial fluid to lubricate the joint which limit
the movement further more. As per shoulder arthroscopy surgeon, the major sign
is severe pain and being unable to move your shoulder, and one may need help of
others to move their shoulder joint.
This condition
develops in three below mentioned stages:
·
Freezing
Stage: First stage is by far the most painful one. At the start the motion
slowly decline which is why it is often get misdiagnosed with rotator cuff
injury. Freezing stage usually lasts from 6 weeks to months. Inflammation makes
shoulder movement increasingly difficult.
·
Frozen
Stage: At this stage the shoulder joint is noticeably stiff. Patient can’t move their arm normally,
and someone else also can’t move patients arm normally. In case of rotator cuff
anyone else can easily move the arm of patient. Frozen phase is seemingly less
painful, but simple movement like combing your hair can trigger the pain.
·
Thawing
Stage: During this stage the capsule of shoulder joint thickens and become
rigid. Some individuals may also experience the improvement in their condition,
but the pain may remain same with normal hand movement.
Frozen shoulder goes through different phases where one can
experience excruciating pain and in final sage where this pain significantly
reduces.
